Spring Read and Write (Close Reading)

Spring is finally here! I am ready for some warmer weather. I don't think I could survive living in the north. I don't know how some of you do it!

Here is a Spring Read and Write to help get you warmed up! These "Read and Writes" are great for introducing close reading. The students have to look back in the story to find the correct answer to complete the sentence correctly.

This Read and Write pack will help prepare your students with the reading comprehension skills they need. The short story in this packet is great for introducing close reading. Your kindergarten students should be ready for this resource by this time of the school year if they are meeting grade level expectations. If your students are still struggling, these short stories can be used for quick read alouds and then completing the sentences together. It makes great independent reading work for first graders.

Spring Read and Write

This product is AVAILABLE in a Read and Write Bundle
offering a SAVINGS of 12%.

In this three page Spring Read and Write pack, students will read the one page spring story and color the pictures. Then there are two pages with five sentences on each page about the story. Students will circle the word that correctly completes the sentence matching the story on the first page, and then write the correct word in the blank.

Reading Comprehension: Who? What? How?

Wow! The third quarter of this school year is almost over. Time sure is flying by! Are your students ready for the next grade level? Have you prepared your students with the reading comprehension skills needed for success in the years ahead?

This reading comprehension packet on Who? What? and How? will help prepare your students with the reading comprehension skills they need. The short stories in this packet are also great for introducing close reading. Your kindergarten students should be ready for this resource by this time of the school year if they are meeting grade level expectations. If your students are still struggling, these short stories can be used for quick read alouds focusing on the Who? What? and How? questions included.

This 7 page book is designed so that you can copy the book, cut it in half, staple, and then it is ready for use. If you would rather use each story separate, you can do that without putting it together in book format. The seven pages consist of a title page "Who? What? How?" with each of the remaining 6 pages including a short story with a matching black and white picture. Under each short story, there are three questions about the story. The three questions ask "Who? What? and How? questions about the story.

The following photos show some of the stories included in the packet.

These stories can be put together in booklet form as discussed above or individual sheets can be used. The story/questions are on a half sheet of paper.

No matter what format you decide to use, there are many uses for these stories/questions. They can be used in a kindergarten class with the teacher reading the story and questions to the students and having the students use invented spelling to write their answers. They can also be used for independent reading practice in first or second grade by letting students read the short story, read the questions, and answer the questions even if they have to look back in the story to find the answer. Looking back in the text to find the answer is part of the popular "close reading" strategies.

These short stories are great for guided reading groups, homework, literacy center activities, independent reading, or for introducing close reading strategies.

I hope your students enjoy these stories and questions. If you like what you see in this product, it is currently available in my Reading Comprehension Bundle including 8 other reading comprehension books. This bundle offers a 15% SAVINGS! You can find the BUNDLE HERE!

I hope your students enjoy these stories and questions.

Numbers (0-20) and Number Words (zero-ten) Sequencing (Hearts - February)

I can't believe January is almost over, but I can't wait until February. February is such a fun month with hearts and candy filled with reds and pinks. Sometimes it seems like students enjoy Valentine's Day more than Christmas. They get so excited over exchanging Valentine cards.

Here's a great way to combine learning with fun as students sequence numbers 0-10, 11-20, 0-20, or number words zero-ten. Using these different combinations of numbers and words provides for differentiation depending on the level of your students. Lower students might still need to practice sequencing 0-10 while others may be working on 11-20 or your higher level students may be ready to sequence number words zero-ten.

No matter which numbers or words your students are working on, students love adding their own colors to these hearts. After coloring, students cut out and glue the hearts in order onto a long strip of paper. You can use a sentence strip, long construction paper pieces taped together, or poster board cut into strips.

The following photos show the numbers and words included in action.

Beginning Sounds (December)

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...at least at everyone else's house. I haven't found the time to get out my Christmas decorations yet. How about you?

I can't believe we only have three weeks until Christmas Break! I think I get more excited than the students at this time of the year.

We will have taught every letter of the alphabet before Christmas break ends. Hopefully you have taught most of them too, so here's some practice for beginning letter sounds and a great deal too. Students get so excited when they start seeing pictures of Santa, Christmas trees, and gifts. This simple beginning sounds pack allows students to enjoy Christmas as well as show their knowledge of beginning sounds. The following photos show 2 of the 4 included pages.

The teacher should name each picture so that the students are familiar with the pictures. The product description names each picture if you are unsure of any of them.

To add more skills and to include different levels of activities, students can label the pictures after cutting and gluing the letter for the beginning sound. You can see in the pictures below that some students did label their pictures. I love seeing how they sound out their words. Then students can color the Christmas pictures. Also, for those students who are ready, they can write a sentence for each picture on the back of their paper, using good writing skills, of course. I get so excited when I can read everything a student has written without them having to read their writing to me. They get excited too when I can read it. They always say, "How do you know what that said?" I always reply with, "Well, you did such a super job stretching and sounds out your words that I could read it." That makes them so proud of their work.

Take a look at one of these four sheets in action showing the different activities they can do with it (cutting and gluing beginning sounds, labeling pictures, coloring, and writing sentences). The students had a blast with these Christmas pictures, and I hope your students do, too! ENJOY!

They really seemed to enjoy coloring these Christmas pictures after cutting and gluing the beginning sounds.

I love how these two students labeled each picture.

The pictures below show two students who went the extra mile to write a sentence on the back of their paper for each picture shown. My students know that they are not to just sit and do nothing. I always tell them that there is always more they can add.

Numbers 0-20 Hide and Seek

I hope all of you got your school year off to a great start. We have just recently completed the first quarter of the year. Time is flying! With the arrival of second quarter, we are teaching numbers, and I'm sure you are too. To help keep you going, here's a deal just for you!

This number packet includes a page for each number 0-20. Here's a few of the pages below.

Students are given directions to color the number a particular color. Students are to make it a game of "hide and seek" as they look to find (tag) the directed number on each page. The numbers on each page are randomly placed for finding and coloring.

To add more skills and to include different levels of activities, students can flip to the back side of their paper and write numbers 0-20 independently.

Here's a couple of the sheets in action.

I hope your students enjoy this game of "hide and seek" as they learn to recognize numbers 0-20.

This Numbers 0-20 Hide and Seek activity is available for
